Wendell B

Welcome to the new edition of the science of soul, lot's of new music around at the moment, we plan on
Mr Sullivan
keeping you up to date as much as we can. Listen out this week for artiste, Mr Sullivan out of Shreveport Louisiana, his hot new single "Best Love" is kicking up a storm in the southern states. We also have a young lady from Washington DC, Temika Moore a multi-talented lady, Temika as recently been seen touring with Eric Benet' and Kindred Family Soul, I'm sure that this year is gonna see her star rise, check out her web site: www.temikamoore.com , my thanks to Sherrie for providing information and getting in touch.

Our good friends down in Houston Texas, at Moulton Records keep turning out a steady supply of great soul music, Choppa Law's new release is no exception. Choppa is something of a legend in Texas and it's not hard to see why; great vocals and solid arrangements. Thanks to my good friend and soul brother Lee McDonald for keeping us up to date with the Texas soul scene.

Eric Nolan Grant
Eric Nolan Grant, one third of the legendary O'Jays had a solo outing that came out towards the end of last year on his own label Wonder Boy label, it's a great track one for the steppers I'm sure it's gonna fill the dance floors and look for good things from this label. Hmmm... got me thinking .... 'bout time we had a new O'Jays album?

Our featured artist this week is a Saint Louis Missouri resident, Wendell Brown. This a man with soul history and an enviable back catalog and his new CD Get To Know Me is just great from first note to the last, I can't recommend this album highly enough. It was hard to select three tracks to play, I could have played the whole thing. In fact over the coming weeks I most likely will. Miss this show at your peril, it's a future classic also be sure to check out Wendell's own web site.

Temika Moore
Our Facebook family continues to grow, people from all around the world, its just amazing to me that so many take time to listen and contact me, I often point out to people that The Science of Soul is not just my show it belongs to all of us because its a reflection of our love of the music. I get so much help and encouragement for this show it's amazing, the work Mickey does in taking care of the web site is invaluable, the messages and music sent from artists and listeners makes it a joy and privilege to present the show. So I thought it would be nice to give everyone a chance to take part. From now on I'm going to do a weekly 'listeners spot' where one listener can pick three of there favorite soul tunes from any era and I'll play them on the show, all you need to do is; tell me a little about yourself, pick your three tracks and the rest if for me. You can reach me at bill.randle@thebridgeradio.net .

This weeks selection comes from my Japanese soul brother Yozi Harada, this man's passion for soul music is second to none, thanks Yozi for taking part.

All that's left to say is sit back and enjoy the music... (Bridge FM readers click here for Podcast)

Wendel B's Biography:
St. Louis is where the blues travels throughout the city and where the sounds of R&B sensation Wendell B are taking the world by storm. Now CEO and President of his own music label, Smoothway Music, St. Louis is very proud of this homegrown balladeer.

First we had a good time with Wendell’s debut CD “Good Times”, which has received rave reviews from all over the world. Next was the follow-up smash CD, “Time to Relax: Love, Life, & Relationships” in which Wendell is simply telling the truth. Then as Christmas fell upon us, he blessed us all with a smooth R&B Christmas CD entitled “Save A Little Room for Me: I’m Coming Home for Christmas.” Now that it’s a new year and time to refresh his fans’ minds, Wendell says it’s simply time to get back to business with his brand new CD entitled “Back Ta Bid’ness”.

Being compared to his idols, Freddie Jackson, Luther Vandross, Barry White, Will Downing, and one of his favorite artist, Joe, this laid back entertainer’s love affair with music began at a very young age. Wendell made his foray into the music industry at the age of five by joining the gospel group the Sensational Wonders. He spent a good ten years singing for the Lord before his vocal tastes were whetted by the sounds of rhythm and blues. “At first I had to hide my interest of R&B music from my Mom because she was into the church and she didn’t play that”, he laughs. As Wendell reached maturity, both in years and vocal ability, he began performing with local groups such as the Dream, a group that he formed in high school, and Visions. While touring in his hometown and surrounding areas, it was then that he really learned the importance of stage presence through the tutelage of local legends Marvin Rice, lead vocalist for Masters Touch, and Carl Holmes, lead vocalist of Visions, who schooled him in perfecting runs and other vocal techniques.
The decision to go solo, after having spent two decades in groups, was based upon his desire to follow in the entrepreneurial footsteps of others in the industry. Wendell left St. Louis in an effort to search for his heart’s desire, his love for music. He spent several years in Minneapolis, Stopping in several other cities along the way, Wendell landed in Atlanta, GA where the music scene began to take off for him.

Phil Perry

It's Science of Soul time once again, thanks to all our Facebook friends for keeping in touch (remember to click 'like' button), I have decided to expand the page a little. If you have looked this week you will see lots of music as been added plus links to TV shows etc., that will be of interest to us soul folk. Check the Johnnie Taylor documentary shown on American TV some time ago, It's a fascinating look at the life of J.T. and the turmoil caused by his sudden death. I won't say to much about it I leave you to come to your own conclusions.

This weeks featured artist needs no introduction as he as been making great music forever, that's Phil Perry. His new album "Say Yes" hit the streets tlast week. Now I know I'm biased because I love everything Phil does, but the album was all I expected plus more...I could do a whole show on Phil (in fact i just might maybe as a Podcast special) but for this week we will play three tracks from the album. More will follow over the weeks as I'm sure you will enjoy this album for years to come. As with all of Phil's work it just gets better with time...class and style always out last trends. My thanks to Mrs Lillian Perry for all of her help with this, please check out Phil's links.

It was great to hear from my good friend Lee McDonald (the Silkysoul Man) and his Moulton Record Company out of Houston Texas because they are about to release a hot new single from Leroy Allen. You might remember we featured them some months aback. The new single is a great remake of The Dazz Band's "Gamble With Our Love," listen out for it on this weeks show I am sure you will approve.

Gorman's solo album
An occasional feature we are adding to the show is 'Revisited Album.' Sometimes an album slips out with very little fan-fare and gets missed. I also miss things so please feel free to remind me, sharing our knowledge is very important. It can be a recent album or something from back-in-the-day, your suggestions are most welcome. Our first revisit is Freddie Gorman's 1997 masterpiece It's All About Love mainly written and produced by his very talented son Dhillon Gorman, I'll feature two tracks from this set. Freddie was a beautiful spirit and this album captures not just his amazing voice but gives you a glimpse into his very soul, his strong faith, tender is a word not often used but take a listen to: My Love and you will understand the true meaning of it, yes soul at it's very best.

Thanks for all the support and great feed back we continue to receive.....sit back enjoy the music.

Phil Perry (born in East St. Louis, IL on January 12, 1952) is an R&B musician and a former member of The Montclairs. The Montclairs left Paula and disbanded in 1975. Perry later teamed with Kevin Sanlin in a duo that had a short stay at Capitol in 1980. In the 1990s he had his biggest success with the number-one R&B hit Call Me, as well as the top forty R&B singles Amazing Love and Forever all from the hit album The Heart of the Man, even though he has released many albums since his breakthrough in 1991, he has not had major success since. Phil Perry is also featured on a lot of GRP Records projects, with guitarist Lee Ritenour in particular. In 2007 he toured with saxophonist Dave Koz. Thank you Mother
First off this week let me say; "A Happy Mothers Day" to all those beautiful ladies who have helped raise us, because their love is pure and unconditional even though sometimes the road may be rocky, the love given remains solid. You have played a major part in making us what we are and for that we thank you. (I know this celebration is on different days in other countries but do love your mother everyday).

I don't know if you got a chance to catch this weeks episode of TVOne's Unsung, what a great show and a richly deserved tribute to The Whispers. They have delivered so much wonderful music and conduct themselves with such dignity and class.....they are truly a group to look up to. Long may they continue to make great music and as a matter of interest there's also a great Whispers live DVD around that's well worth checking out.

Ron Banks
I had the privilege of participating in a tribute to my late friend Ron Banks this week along with his wife Sandy and several members of the Bank's family on a Detroit radio station. I do think a Dramatics Unsung is way over due! So come on TV.ONE give the people what they want. I have a nice treat lined-up for next weeks show with a so-far un-issued track by these guys and believe me it's a future classic.

Our featured label today is Miles Anthony William's New York based company, Righteous Music. Miles is a true 'soul brother' because it was his company that gave us Darien's classic album If These Wall's Could Talk, I will feature a couple of tracks from that set plus a great song from Margot B. We do need to show our support for these independent companies because it's tough trying make a living from music these days. Much  respect and thanks to labels like this who bring us such great music.

Bobby left us the music!
You are probably all aware of Bobby Roger's (of The Miracles,) sad passing last week again Mickey has kindly added an interview that I did with him at his Southfield home in 1993 for PCRL radio( it's found in the left column). Bobby was a founding member of The Miracles and often a writing partner to Smokey Robinson on many classic hit's from the past. The last time I saw Bobby was at the Greater Grace Church in Detroit when myself and Charles Davis of The Contours sat with him at Ron Bank's home going. Bobby Rogers was a fine man with charm and class to spare, I just know his spirit will be with us always, thanks to his joyous music.

Thank you for visiting us here at the Science Of Soul please sit back enjoy the music..

EJ Johnson (Enchantment)

PCRL Enchantment Special with E.J. Johnson Circa. 1998

EJ Johnson (photo:Bill Randle)
Welcome to the first Science Of Soul for March. There's a slight change to this weeks format in that our featured artist is normally someone with new product on the streets, but I've made the decision to feature E.J. Johnson and his group Enchantment. EJ. has just received the prestigious Soultracks Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is richly deserved and all the sweeter as he is here to receive it,  in that I mean is it's wonderful to see an artist honored in life rather than posthumously as is so often the case, all respect to Chris Rizik at Soultracks.
Great Live DVD
Today I'll be playing four songs by Enchantment and trust me it was no easy choice, their back-catalogue is amazing, plus as an added bonus (above) to our ever expanding and loyal Podcast listeners, a rare interview I recorded with E.J. back in the late-90's for PCRL radio, in his home town Detroit. Mickey Nold has worked so hard to find this interview and bring it to you. His archive contains so much stuff I've recorded over years and his dedication in preserving soul history is awe inspiring. We have many more interviews to share with you as time and space allows and most of these I have not even heard in over twenty years.

Phil Perry
Great to see my old friend Eddie James Kendrick featured on this weeks edition of Unsung. Eddie was a complex and charismatic man and a wonderful talent and a true 'unsung hero.' Please be sure to check it out. Coming very soon we will be featuring Phil Perry's new album "Say Yes," I'm always happy to hear new product from this great singer...... In fact I might give you a little teaser on this weeks show.

Thanks to everyone who took time-out last week to send me birthday wishes, I am truly humbled by your calls; F/B messages and emails. I have tried to reply to everyone but if I missed you out, please forgive me it's my age ....laughs.Also I must say thanks to my fellow presenters at 102.5FM The Bridge for all there support in promoting the show you are all true gentlemen and ladies.I have been meaning to point out that in the top right hand corner of the page Mickey as installed a search engine to help you find tracks that have been played in previous shows, very useful if you are trying to find a particular tune ...he thinks of everything.

Richard Street (far left)
Just looking back over 2013 and so far it's been a sad year in term's of  the loss of so many soul legend's. This week we lost another Temptation and ex-Monitors singer, Richard Street. Much has and will be written about Richard so I wont cover old ground, be at peace Richard and what an amazing line-up of Temptations you will be reunited with....'Truly Heavenly.'

As always sit back enjoy and thank you for being part of the Science Of Soul family. [Bridge FM readers click here for Podcasts]

Enchantment biography:
Enchantment is a 1970s R&B band formed in Detroit, Michigan by Emanuel "EJ" Johnson, Bobby Green, Mickey Clanton, Joe Thomas and Dave Banks. They are best known for the hits "Gloria" and "It's You That I Need".
Beginnings
Enchantment first joined forces in the late 60s at Detroit's Pershing High School. The group obtained their first recording contract by winning first place in a 1969 talent contest sponsored by local Detroit radio station WCHB. In 1970, Enchantment joined forces with Artists International, a talent development agency for up-and-coming artists (founded by renowned manager Dick Scott). For the next several years, Enchantment began to hone their craft, concentrating on stage presence, choreography etc. by performing in numerous clubs around the city.
Success
By 1976, Enchantment had its first big break by signing with music industry veteran and internationally known pop artist Sid Maurer (the "Daddy of NuPOP Art"), Tash Howard and Fred Frank on their Roadshow Records imprint. Then they released their self-entitled debut album, Enchantment. Two singles from the album would chart very well on the R&B Charts. "Gloria" at number five and "Sunshine" at number three. The self-contained group would enter the studio in the fall of 1977, and recorded their second album, Once Upon A Dream. The album was a gem, far surpassing its predecessor charting on the R&B album charts at eight and Pop Albums charts at 46. It features the crossover ballad "It's You That I Need" which charted at number one on the R&B charts. Unfortunately, while Once Upon A Dream should have thrust the group to A-list status, it would became Enchantment's commercial peak. Journey to the Land Of... Enchantment would be Enchantment's third and final album with Roadshow. Released in 1979, this would be their final album that would chart well on the R&B charts coming in at number 25. But problems with Roadshow's promotion and visibility of the group along with Note Bobby Green was dismissed from the group after the first album.
Decline
By 1980, Roadshow had folded and shut down, Enchantment would sign with RCA Records. Soft Lights, Sweet Music was the band's fourth album. The album was a disappointment with both singles charting at 47 respectively in 1981. Enchantment would sign with Columbia Records in 1982 and would go on to release two more albums; Enchanted Lady (1982) and Utopia (1984). Both albums barley dented the charts. Utopia would be their last album released.
Currently
Today, Enchantment still performs to enthusiastic fans. Also, in 2003 Enchantment released "God Bless America" in honor of the Troops fighting in Iraq with proceeds benefiting the United Way. (Wiki 2013)
