Robert Pruter

Listener: Robert Pruter
It's Science of Soul time once again, and this week I am very honored to have in the Listeners Choice* part of the show, the celebrated author Robert Pruter. I'm sure most of you will be aware of the excellent work Robert has done over the years as a columnists with Goldmine magazine and many other publications and his book "Chicago Soul" is widely regarded as THE book on all things soulful that came out of the Windy City. His music knowledge is amazing and he has picked songs that were recorded during that golden period of Chicago Soul, just know you will enjoy.

Talking of Chicago, last weekend at The Black Ensemble Theater saw the opening of: The Life Of Curtis Mayfield: "It's Alright Have A Good Time," and if any of you attended I would just love to hear your thoughts..... so get in touch and let me know. The lead roll is played by long time member of The Impressions, Reggie Torian, I hope at some point a movie will follow, as you know I'm a big Curtis fan so this is of real interest to me. If your new to S-O-S checkout my interview with Curtis Mayfield III, that's Mayfield's son, he chats with me about growing up as the eldest sibling of a music icon and the legacy his father left, you'll find the link on the side this page.

Due to the fact I am always trying cram as much music into each show as possible I haven't included my regular Featured Artist spot this week, but don't worry there's still lots of new music included and most of that I've been wanting to play for weeks! The 'feature' will return next week. That's enough from me, sit back enjoy the music and please remember to hit the Facebook like button if you enjoy, it helps with our promotion and please feel free to share the Science of Soul link.

Melvin Jordan II
Welcome to the latest edition of the Science of Soul and thank you to all people who take time out to get in touch, its always good to hear from you and the folks who share the SOS links week in and week out, please know you are all a vital part of program and I truly thank you. I must say an over due thank you to Melvin Jordan II for scheduling the Show on on his excellent Legend107radio.com in Florida, these are the things that help us grow and reach new audience and as I always say please don't hesitate to contact me with song choices and information that you would like to share.

Mickey's 2-Step Vinyl Blog
I've been getting a lot of en quires about interviews that I've done in the past! I am genuinely shocked at how many people know about them. We try to filter them on to the site were possible, but its quite time consuming converting the old reel-to-reel tapes to digital and that work falls on Mickey's shoulders. He as done a wonderful job so far, and yes it would be a great idea to put them on a dedicated interview page with it's own links, so that's a maybe future project. I do like to preserve Soul history, that's one aim of my blog. Please also check out Mickey's own Blog sites, I know you will find a wealth of stuff on their to feed your craving for all things soulful.

Listener: Annette
This weeks Listeners Choice* comes from Annette Williams, a relatively new convert to Soul music, she's based here in Birmingham, England. Annette works at the City's university. Her taste in music is quite diverse and her knowledge of soul music has grown considerably over the last few years, Annette lists amongst her favorite artists, Smokey Robinson and The Stylistics, so you know she has picked three classic slow jams...and you wont get any complaints from me, lol.

Featured this week the is album by T.G.T., (that being Tank, Genuine and Tyreese) and they have debuted together with "Three Kings," it came as bit of a surprise to me and a pleasant one at that.  It really feels like we have a lot of artists with real talent around at the moment and a kind of unity that can only be good for the music industry. I have to say I'm not a big fan of tracks featuring' this or that artists' but when three real talents work together like this the results are pretty good. I hope you enjoy the tracks I have chosen but please remember its only my choice so check out the album I'm sure you will like other tracks too.

En Vogue singer Dawn Robinson
Listen out for the recent song from Willie Clayton, big fan of Willie he is a prolific recording artist and rarely fails to deliver great product. A new name to me is Dawn Robinson, but her release "Set It Off" is very impressive, thanks to Mickey Nold for pointing this one out to me. I never need an excuse to play anything by Yolanda Adams, I just  think this lady is amazing and she is the Gospel Pick for this week.So there's the round-up of what's on offer for this show in addition to the usual mix of soulful tunes, some well known, some not so, I like to keep it interesting here at the Science Of Soul so enjoy and please remember to share my link and thank you for being part of  my Soul family. T.G.T. Biography:

TGT is a supergroup formed in 2007 that consists of successful R&B singers Tyrese, Ginuwine, and Tank. The three are friends and Tyrese was best man at Ginuwine's wedding, but this represents their first collaboration. Their first song is a remix of Tank's "Please Don't Go". The trio also appears on Slim Thug's single "Let Me Grind". In an interview, Tyrese said the group would be the "ultimate R&B fan experience. Me, Tank and Ginuwine been talking about this forever. The reason why this makes sense is that besides all of us being R&B singers, we're all good friends. Every time I see Tank, every time I see Ginuwine, we all had good energy regardless." The trio planned the Shirts Off Tour for late 2007, with Avant as an opening act. As part of the tour, they planned to hold auditions for a fourth member of the group. The tour faced delays, however, and was anticipated for early 2008. The group faced difficulties given that each member of the trio is signed to a different record label, and on August 21, 2008 Ginuwine announced on his MySpace blog that due to label and legal issues they will not be able to release an official TGT album at the moment.
On September 22, 2012, Tyrese reveal on his Twitter page that the group has been officially signed to Atlantic Records.  They released their debut album Three Kings on August 20, 2013 on Atlantic Records.

Jahiem

If it's your first visit then welcome and to our regulars thank you so much for all the love and support you give. This weeks show is cram packed with music, I will be featuring the new album from Jaheim "Appreciation Day," this guy as been doing it a long time now and it's hard to top his classic albums of the past, apart from the obvious subject matter of this album there is some thought provoking music. "Florida" is a powerful comment on the Trayvon Martin case, the repercussions of which have been felt throughout the United States. Its a brave move to tackle such a sensitive topic but I feel Jaheim has handled it very well. Much of the album deals with subjects of a more personal level, most of the songs are well crafted and delivered in Jaheim's inimitable style, does it measure up to his albums of the past is a question only each listener can answer. I have selected three tracks that I enjoyed, and I have to say the more I hear the album the more I enjoy it
Listener: Mike Wheeler
The Listeners Choice* this week comes from Mike Wheeler of Houston, Texas. Mike is a long time Soul man with a very varied taste, his selections are first rate, as are all our listeners choices, the Aaron Neville track was completely new to me ....how I missed that I will never know? thanks Mike for bringing it to my attention. I think you will enjoy Mike's tracks as much as I did.

I've chosen Terry Townsend's "Move Out Of My Way," for this weeks Gospel Spot because I think it's a powerful contemporary piece from a few years ago, whilst on the subject of Terry check out his latest release "Mutual Love Affair" you will find it in one of the shows from a couple of weeks back. Remember if you have missed any shows many are still available on this site for you to revisit.

Drew Schultz's "Back To Class" project gets a spotlight today too, if your not familiar with Drew he is an amazingly talented drummer as well as fronting his own band he as toured the world with The Four Tops. What he's done is to link up with surviving members of Motown's Funk Brothers (studio session band) and several other Detroit veterans to produce an album to help raise funds for music class's within the Detroit public school system. I think we are all aware of the problems faced by the Motorcity so anything positive is a real boost. What makes Drew's achievements even more impressive it that he is still such a young man. I am very proud to call him a friend, he is a rare talent ...and it's just the beginning for this young man, I can only imagine what he will accomplish in the coming years.

Finally some bad news in...sad to hear of Bobby Martin's passing, he was a key component it the Philly sound, his list of credits is truly amazing (including the 'Soul Train' theme), he set the standards for others to aim for. I met Bobby back in the day in Philadelphia, he was a humble and incredibly talented man - his music will survive us all - RIP The Great Bobby Martin.

On with the music, so sit back and relax and please remember to share the gift of music with your friends the more we reach the more we teach. [Bridge FM readers click 4 Podcast]

Jaheim's Biography:
Born Jaheim Hoagland, New Jersey, USA. This urban R&B singer's 2001 debut tapped into the stateside success of neo-soul artists such as Joe and Carl Thomas. Raised in the projects of New Brunswick, Hoagland escaped the tribulations of his upbringing owing to his faith in music and a vocal ability which was already in evidence in his early teenage years. His demo tape was heard by producer Kay Gee (of Naughty By Nature), and led to a joint contract with Gee's new Divine Mill label and Warner Brothers Records. Gee oversaw the production of Jaheim's debut album, which featured material composed predominantly by Jaheim and BLACKstreet's Eric Williams. Crossing the boundaries between classic soul and hip-hop, Jaheim's fluid baritone and street swagger earned widespread praise from followers of both old and new school R&Born His debut single, "Could It Be", was a national radio hit during summer 2000, paving the way for the Top 10 success of Ghetto Love.

Discography:
Ghetto Love (Divine Mill/Warners 2001)****, Still Ghetto (Divine Mill/Warners 2002)***, 2006 Ghetto Classics, 2007 The Makings Of A Man, 2008 Classic Jahiem Vol 1, 2010 Another Round, 2013 Appreciation Day.

Randy Darbonne

Still Lots of new music hitting the streets, I'll endeavor to feature as much as possible, but if your an artist I miss please just get in touch and I'll put that right. Any listeners who spot good album/song you can also let me know, the aim of the Science of Soul is to reach as many people as we can and share your music. Thank you to all the listeners and artists who so willingly share our links, and 'we' continue to grow month-on-month. You can get in touch with me by emailing bill.randle@thebridgeradio.net or just go to Bill Randle on Facebook, and it's as easy as that. If you would like to take part in the show and select 3 of your favorite Soul tracks, you can contact in the same way.

This week a gentleman that I have the utmost respect for is my Featured Artist; Mr Randy Darbonne, from Lake Charles. Randy spent many years living in San Francisco before moving back home to care for his elderly Mom  - Mrs Darbonne done raised a fine Son! I know the struggles Randy went through to complete this project as well possessing a great vocal range he is an accomplished song writer and draws much of his inspiration from everyday life. Pay close attention to "Got A Call," that song probably tells you more about the man than I ever could. Randy's style is smooth but with that Southern style swag. I feel this, his third solo album is his strongest yet and with opening track "Voodoo Child" is a smash waiting to happen. If you remember I played it a couple of weeks back ahead of the album "The Truth" being released. Three tracks in this weeks show and featuring others over the coming weeks .Show your support for Randy Darbonne "The Truth".

Bill & Johnny Bristol
Today's show -  I've music from the new albums by: Maysa, John Legend and C Robert Walker, two of which have already been Featured Artists over the past few weeks, so it's a usual mix of new nearly new and classic that seems to work so well. In the Gospel Spot we have the late Johnny Bristol who spent many years at Motown working as a staff writer and producer before having a string of hits himself in the 1970's and 80's, though not often associated with Gospel music, he made some beautifully crafted songs of that genre late on in his career, I interviewed Johnny back in the day and  it's one I could maybe dust off and post on the SOS site at some future point.

Music time.... and don't forget to share the shows links and give the gift of music (link the love). [Bridge listeners click 4 Podcast]

Will Preston

Welcome to the first show of September 2013, and this week my featured artist is a young man who's debut album "It's My Will" came out a few years back, he has kept us waiting a while for the follow up  -  was worth the wait! "#Reacquainted" is a set that states loud and clear "Will Preston is back" and if this is anything to go he will be around a long time. His track "Candy Coated Raindrops" is being well received by radio stations and public alike, and with the right push this album is gonna fly. Check out Will's biography a bottom of page for more information.

Anthony Sullivan
I love when people come together for the greater good and this is exactly what as happened in Shreveport LA. a bunch of artists have come together to help put the city on the Soul map, I know this had been a long time dream of my good friend Anthony Sullivan because we have spoke of it on many occasions. To get a group of local artists to work together is a tough task, but they did it, he said; "I am proud of each and everyone of them  -  together there is strength." The first release from the Shreveport All Stars is "Love & Unity," think the title says it all! The City has a rich history and still  an amazing array of talent in all sections of music, so coming together in this way is the perfect way of saying we are serious about our music and we love our city. I just think this is a great example to others and can only inspire the young people coming into the music industry... so LADIES & GENTLEMEN I salute you!

Listener: DJ Sissy King
My Listeners Choice this week comes from the lovely Ms Sissy Virginia King* originally from Maine, Sissy now resides in the nations capital Washington DC.  Now Sissy is one smooth lady as you will see from her selection; 'three-in-a-row'  from Frankie Beverley and Maze... yes it's hard to beat that. Thanks go to Sissy for picking such great music and being part of the Science of Soul family.
Just a quick reminder that it's this week that I hit the USA on legend107.com , the show goes out at 2pm EST,and it's just one of a variety of ways you can pick-up the the program., as always enjoy the music and if  you think I need to hear or know anything, you can email me at bill.randle@thebridgeradio.net or just hit on Face book. Will Preston's Biography:

Will Preston was first introduced to most music fans several years ago with the release of his debut CD, It’s My Will, on the West King Entertainment imprint, but long before then, this multitalented singer/songwriter was laying the foundation for his foray onto the music scene. Growing up in Virginia, Will always knew that music was his calling. A quick read of the liner notes of his first release tells of how he was fascinated with his grandmother’s vast collection of records and how he imagined as a young boy that he would one day see himself on the cover of an album. He never lost sight of that vision and completed his first official recording, There’s Still Time, while attending the esteemed George Mason University, where he earned a degree in Finance. The excitement of that experience further intensified his passion for writing and creating melodies. He continued to write and amassed an impressive arsenal of love songs, many of which found their way onto his 2005 debut.

It’s My Will garnered rave reviews worldwide and was featured on many of the most well-known and respected websites and radio stations. Numerous magazine articles and television appearances also helped fuel the debut’s success, which went on to gain worldwide distribution and licensing deals in the UK, Japan, Germany, Spain, Canada, The Netherlands and many other territories, solidifying its reputation as one of the most significant debut efforts by an independent artist. Its success not only proved that R&B was still a viable genre but also that a new voice had emerged that would forever be added to an elite list of R&B masters. Will followed up his debut release with Caught In The Act…The LIVE Experience, an impressive double disc CD/DVD that gave fans a more intimate look at the R&B crooner and his artistry.

Now Will returns to the spotlight with his new release #reacquainted. He teams up once again with Billboard charting producer Funkeeboy, who largely produced It’s My Will, on four of the songs, proving that the duo still has the “IT” factor. True to his signature style, Will delivers with a distinction that is totally unique. Vocally, this project showcases Will’s dynamic range on songs like I Gave My All, Candy Coated Raindrops, Falling in Love, Painful Times and others. Upbeat tracks like Bring Back the Days, and the funky My Book present an edgier sound than we’ve heard from Will in the past, but one that proves his ability to move beyond the comfort zone with ease. His natural penchant as a lyricist is evident throughout the project as well. The buzz surrounding #reacquainted's release led to a nomination for Best R&B Male Artist at the highly coveted Georgia Music Awards ahead of the CD’s release. With #Reacquainted, he proves to his fans that some things truly are worth the wait.
