Bill's TV debut in Detroit
Thanks for stopping by this weeks Science of Soul, as many of you will all ready know I'm currently in Detroit after it took me three days long to fly to Chicago? very frustrating, but still worth the trip. I had big fun on the Brenda Perryman TV Show with Drew Schultz and what a great surprise to run into Marvin Willis of The Detroit Emeralds & Henry Tyler we could have talked for hours ..... in fact we did, lol. Then a late lunch with "Buttered & Soul", Pat & Diane Lewis at Fishbones then an evening with J J & Bernice Barnes .... A day in Detroit, .hope to put it here and make it available on the site when I return, I do have it on DVD to bring back. Be sure to keep up with the FB page for updates on the trip as always I do run into some interesting people.

Orthiea Barnes in 1987
Very sad to hear the news of singer Orthiea Barnes (J.J. Barnes's sister) passing I have to say Detroit is in mourning, among those scheduled to sing at the 'home going service' is Aretha Franklin, a tribute indeed.  Barnes was an American R&B and jazz singer who opened for Motown greats including Stevie Wonder and later entered the ministry. Barnes-Kennerly recorded in the 1960s for Detroit's Mickay Records and Coral Records, a Decca Records label. While never signing with Motown Records, she opened for a number of its stars, including Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight. Barnes died Friday in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she went for a performance, friend and bass player Ralphe Armstrong told the Detroit Free Press. She had at least two strokes in recent years and died of heart failure, she was 70.

My thanks as always to Mickey for keeping things ticking over in my absence .. heard a rumor Mickey might be back on the air waves himself, lets hope so .... Ok on with music it's mainly old school classics this week I will be getting back to normal on my return.

This weeks 'end of show video' is from the late great Jackie Wilson, it's his story in a documentary, enjoy the music and please share the link...

Brenda Perryman Show!

While I'm in Detroit I will be a guest on The Brenda Perryman TV Show, introducing the viewers to my good friend Drew Schultz's music projects in Detroit, that's airing on Friday May 22nd. Perryman Show, sometimes titled "Talk To Me with Brenda Perryman" is a community affairs and variety talk program. It broadcasts live from 9am-10am. on Comcast Channel 90 in Detroit and WHPR TV 33 Highland Park and on Comcast in Oakland County. They stream live on www.tv33whpr.com. Mel Waiters
Soul singer Mel Waiters is currently being treated in a Texas hospital for cardiac pulmonary complications. His condition is serious and the family ask that all concerned parties refrain from calling family members and refrain from calling the hospital. For more information and updates contact Rogers Redding 478-742-8772,  and please keep those prayers going up. Visit The Boogie Report for more updates.

BB King who got his first break working as a DJ in Memphis's WDIA radio along with the late  Rufus Thomas, was another music great that we have now lost, he died this week aged 89 and had been unwell for some weeks. He made his guitar sing in a way that was unique to himself and will be missed by many. 90 minute show from 2011 at the foot of the page - RIPBB

Jureesa "The Duchess" Mcbride

Thank you for visiting the Science of Soul web site, on this weeks show I pay tribute to Benjamin Earl King, it seems we lose a legend every week. Please forgive the fact that I have not included "Stand By Me," but I wanted to give a glimpse of the mans all around talent.

The Featured Artist this week is Jureesa "The Duchess" Mcbride the Southern soul ladies are coming on really strong at the minute and I have 2 tracks from her forthcoming EP.

Whilst on the subject of new music, my dear friend Dwayne Palmer kindly sent me the new release from Robert H Fowler this guy is certainly on the rise and I'm expecting big things from Robert over the next few months, In fact the whole Lovebeams organisation has tremendous potential and rest assured I'll keep you up to date.

I was driving along the other day when Gerald Levert came on my stereo, song from his album "Do I Speak For The World," I had not played it for awhile ... wow the track "Closure" just blew me away, that I had to include it in this weeks show. The video today is a very well made, 90 minute documentary about the life of Mr James Brown, found as usual at the foot of page.

Okay as always, on with the music, please share the link ...

Jureesa Mcbride's biography:

I started my journey toward recording my songs around 2007, but I had to step back for a minute. So come June of 2011, I stepped back out on faith and my love for true music. I entered "The Face The Music Tournament" in Jackson, MS for six weeks. I walked away as The Winner of the 2011 Tournament and I never stop moving. I am a recording artist, songwriter, entertainer, who can sing the blues. My music is the foremost important thing to me after God and family. I write and sing in genre of Soul, R&B, Southern Soul, Blues and Pop. Some of the greatest artists who inspire me are Tyrone Davis, Aretha Franklin, J.Blackfoot, Patti La Belle, The Legendary Benny Latimore, Johnny Taylor, Peggy Scott-Adams, Ms. Etta James, Whitney Houston and many others. Adrena

Thank you for stopping by this weeks Science of Soul, the Featured Artist this week is a young Southern soul lady who's star is most definitely on the rise, I have three tracks from her excellent album; "Better Thangs", Adrena is a Southern soul story teller for real born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, having established herself as a permanent fixture on the Live Circuit, It's just matter of time before she really breaks big. Soul music lost two more singers over the last few weeks of May in Tony Drake  (17th) and Ben E. King (30th), music from them in next weeks show perhaps.

Tony Clarke
Two songs also today also from 1960's soul man Tony Clarke who was tragically shot and killed during a domestic dispute in 1971, it's great to see that he is being inducted posthumously into the R&B Hall of Fame on October 4th, he was most certainly a talent that had very little time to develop. I have to show respect to his son Geno Clarke, who continues to work tirelessly maintaining his fathers legacy.

New music this week comes from; Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, Southern soul lady Sheba Potts-Wright, and Tuxedo group I know nothing about   -  but they sound good, and not forgetting Jeff Bradshaw's excellent new set that features guest vocals that read like a who's who from the current soul market.

Ok It's music time sit back enjoy....
