Tara
It's the festive season and all that I know is everyone's busy, so an extra big thank you is due for taking time out to visit the Science of Soul. Just a little note there will be no show on Christmas day but we will return on New Years Day as normal. I must take this chance to also make apologies for some of the disruption over the last few weeks partly due to my stateside trip and BCR Radio moving to brand new studios I'm sure you can imagine the logistics of moving to new studios whilst keeping the station on air 24 hours a day. Well done to all the BCR  tech crew who have done an amazing job.

Mayer Hawthorne biography:
Mayer Hawthorne, the project of Detroit's dj, producer and singer-songwriter Andrew Cohen, debuted with A Strange Arrangement (Stones Throw, 2009), a faithful reconstruction of the sound of Motown soul of the Sixties that was entirely performed and assembled by him in person. Not a postmodernist meditation on a style but a straightforward nostalgic imitation of that style, notably Just Ain't Gonna Work Out, Maybe So, Maybe No, I Wish It Would Rain, Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'?, One Track Mind. How Do You Do (2011) was a better sculpted exercise in blue-eyed soul revival influenced by Steely Dan's lounge elegance: Can't Stop, Finally Falling, No Strings, and especially The Walk and A Long Time. Meanwhile the relentless Motown party sound lives on with Dreaming
 and Hooked

RIP Sharon Jones
Thanks for visiting The Science of Soul. It's with much sadness I have to report the loss of yet another soul legend, Ms Sharon Jones. Ty Juan

Thanks for visiting The Science of Soul this week. Featured Artist this week is Atlanta based Ty Juan and his new album called "Signature," think it's pretty special showing well crafted songs just dripping in soul. You'll will be hearing a lot about this album I feel sure. I have new music from The Dazz Band's Stan Edward Moore which is being well received on both sides of the Atlantic. I'm also gonna give you a little peek into the forthcoming album from Roy Roberts that I think you might like (thanks to Dave Welding @ Soul Junction Records for this.) He is essentially a Blues man, this will appeal to Soul folks as well, more information on the album as and when I get it.

Andy Stokes has just released his "Full Circle" EP, and the man from Portland, Oregon, is sounding pretty smooth, I'm thinking the standout track for me is "Lets Have A Good Time." I am going dip into the Motown vaults for a moment to bring to you Ivy Jo Hunter's version of the Spinners classic "Truly Yours." It's just one of  'the' Motown Classics that he wrote. His contribution to the 'The Sound of Young America' was immense. 10 years this week since we lost Gerald Levert, a documentary is  included below in remembrance. OK it's music time hit the play button and enjoy. Please remember to tell a friend about the Science of Soul..

Welcome to The Science of Soul and thank you to all the people who checked out the vintage interview specials with CP Spencer & Louvain Demps, the response as been overwhelming, so keep a lookout for more of these in the future. A list of Specials is on right of this page. On my show this week a sprinkling of DaPaul's new set titled "London Town." It's the follow up album from his "Soulful Spirit" project from a couple of years back. Andantes Special with Louvain Demps

Welcome to a Podcast, this time only interview, originally sent out via PCRL radio in the late 1990's. This week I found an interview (via Mickey's archive) I did with Ms Louvain Demps. This lady was one of Motown's premier background vocalists from the studio group The Andantes.

Louvain, 'Beans' Bowles ,Clay McMurray (Rear), me+Frances Nero
Firstly let me explain just how it came about it involved the late Frances Nero, who was a very, very, dear friend called me and said; "hey Bill let's have a BBQ at the weekend?" so of course it took around one second to accept the invitation. Frances kindly asked me to invite some friends, so a few calls were made; J.J. Barnes, Sylvia Moy, Ivy Jo Hunter, Hattie Littles and a bunch of other people all headed out to Frances' home in Southfield. It was a gloriously sunny afternoon as we made our way along the Southfield freeway with expectations of a lazy afternoon and a long night hanging with Detroit music royalty ... and that's just the way it was. Midway through the evening Frances said; "Hey Bill, Louvain's on the phone, come say hi," and being the gentleman that I am, I did as I was told, lol, now Louvain said; " I'm gonna be in Detroit in a couple of days will you still be there?" and thankfully my answer was yes!

Always in the background (Marvin & Kim)
So plans were made to meet up at Frances's home a few days later. I got to thinking this is just too-good-a chance to pass! so I suggested an interview while we were together there. I had never seen or heard a real 'in depth' interview with any members of The Andantes, just the usual sound bites for documentaries, etc., The interview that took place was a roller-coaster ride of tears laughter and pure emotion. I have really never put a lot of planning into interviews I would much rather let it go in the direction it naturally takes and this was a perfect example.

I am happy to say during more recent times The Andantes have been given recognition for there amazing part in helping to create The Motown Sound most noticeably there induction into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, sadly Marlene Barrow died in February 2015. Louvain currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.  Step back with me 20 years-or-so and hear first hand a slice of The Motown story, with added music.

Today I'm joined in the studio by my great friend Mr Clinton Coleman and he's just flown in from Las Vegas to be on the show, I am sure you will enjoy his selections. If your wondering where the play list has gone, I have not done one for this show because we plan on going were the music takes us.
Clinton Coleman & Bill
Yet more sad news! as I mentioned live on last Sunday's show the loss of DJ Herb Kent, but now I'm putting it to paper Mr Kent was a real radio legend, known all around the world as "The cool gent" he is probably Chicago's most popular DJ of all time, he was such a nice humble guy.

Thanks to all the people who visited the Site last week for the CP Spencer interview, it was truly amazing to hear it again. Mickey is continuing his mission to restore the historic interviews and Louvaine Demps of the Andantes will be made available from Wednesday. Time to hit the play button and enjoy ...

The Originals Special with CP Spencer

This special podcast only edition is is being made available thanks to Mickey Nold, in more ways than one Mickey is responsible, it was him who put a reel to reel recorder in my bag and said interview these people! you know now all these years later I am so glad he did. This particular one is very dear to me having been a big fan of The Originals.

I first heard "Baby I'm For Real" when I was just a kid in school it blew me away then, it still does the same thing today. Back then I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams that one day we would become true friends. This interview was recorded in Warren, Michigan after Hank Dixon, Freddy Gorman & Walter Gains had relocated to California and Ty Hunter had joined the group.

C P was the only Original left in Detroit. Just hearing this transports me back in time some 19 years, and thankfully Mickey has preserved this and many other interviews I did back then for PCRL and he continually works tirelessly to restore and convert them from the original reel to reel tapes to a digital format to achieve the best sound quality possible. Sit back and enjoy a slice of Motown history ... they were the golden years.  Next  Wednesday, Louvain Demps Special.

Recorded on 10-07-1997 in Detroit and broadcasted on Mickey's Basement Soul Show on PCRL Radio Birmingham 103.5 FM later that year

Big Sonny
Thanks for stopping by this weeks Science of Soul, yet more sad news! yes I'm afraid one of the founding members of the legendary Philadelphia group The Intruders, has passed Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards died from a heart attack in his home town last week. From the original group line-up only Phil Terry still survives, I send my condolences to Big Sonny's family.

Stan Moseley
Music wise this week I will be featuring Eric BenĂ©t's new album, I am a big fan of Eric's and look-out Stateside because he's doing dates with Anthony Hamilton and Lalah Hathaway ..  gonna be hell of a show! As I mentioned last week my Chi-Town soul brother, namely Stan Mosley, had taken a trip to the 'City of brotherly love' to do some recording with Bobby Eli, a man who was a major part of TSOP [The Sound Of Philadelphia] back in the day. well I've got the first results of that session and you can hear it here today. I will also be album tracking with Kindred The Family Soul and one of my favorite Southern soulstresses, that being Adrena, with a real classic from her "Better Days" album.

With my regular mix of Old Skool jams I hope there's a little something for everyone to enjoy today, so hit the play button, sit back and enjoy ...

BenĂ©t was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is the youngest of five siblings. BenĂ©t sang with a Top 100-style group called Gerard in the late 1980s. BenĂ©t, his sister Lisa, and his cousin George Nash Jr. formed a band called BenĂ©t and released a self-titled album in 1992, and it went on to sell over 100,000 copies. Two years later, Eric BenĂ©t broke onto the music scene with his solo career and signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his debut solo album, True to Myself in 1996. His second album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999 and featured his smash hit "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)". The song rose to #1 on the US Billboard R&B charts (for 3 weeks), was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group". The album also won a Soul Train Music Award for "Best R&B/Soul Album, Male". More at Wiki
