Jay Nemor

George & His Gang @ O2 Arena Birmingham
It's Science of Soul time once again, and back to normal after last weeks pre-recorded show. I've got to say George Clinton, Parliament and Funkadelic were amazing, so for all the scopes please visit Mickey's site at: 2-Step Vinyl Soul for photos & review. In honor of their visit I thought it only right to include a couple of P-Funk tracks.. It was a hard choice.

I welcome another new sponsor to the Science of Soul this week; Sir Richard Davis, please check him out at www.sirsuits.com for a great range of menswear and something for the ladies.
The Featured album this week is Jay Nemor's excellent set ;"Just Sayin' Ole Folks Music," It came out last year and I have no idea how I missed it then, but I am putting that right this week. The Houston, Texas, basketball player, who now makes his home in Oslo, has a very jazzy vibe, in a Gil Scott-Heron kind-of-way, I think you will enjoy this set as much as I do.

Great to see Con-funk-shun are back recording, I have a track from their forthcoming album, also listen out for Tanya Holt's stunning single "I Am Not Broken" ... very powerful. Also have a couple of tracks from the excellent compilation album "Soul On The Real Side - Vol. 3"
Ooh, before I forget, this week I have a great documentary made in 2005 about George Clinton and his multi groups, found at the foot of this page.

Okay on with the music please share the link with a friend sit back and enjoy.

Jay Nemor's biography:
Singer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist Jay Nemor (Jason Nemor Harden) began his musical journey at the age of nine on the electric bass in his hometown of Houston, Texas. His bass being stolen after only a short while, by age 11 he turned his attention the alto saxophone and played until the age of 14 in various stage and concert bands as well as solo performances. Once again misfortune struck as his horn was unfortunately stolen during his freshman year in high school triggering the burial of his passion for the saxophone and music.  More @ jaynemore.com

Howard Hewett

A George Clinton moment, thanks to Pat Lewis
Welcome to this weeks Science of Soul, I had to pre-record this weeks show due to a prior commitment (seeing George Clinton & Funkadelic live) I know you will understand, Lol. So my apologies to those of you who tried to contact me during the show via fb and in the studio I know given the circumstances you will forgive me lol. A lot of old school tunes on this weeks show I'm saving the new stuff for next week when its back to normal, one exception is the latest single from Howard Hewett who I got a chance to catch up with last week . I have to say the Shalamar live gig was very impressive and Howard is truly one of the greats with an amazing voice and I gotta say Jeffery Daniels vocals were also top notch and newest member Carolyn Griffey is a great edition to the group, daughter of Solar Records founder Dick Griffey she fits the bill perfectly.

Sadly it was announced this week we lost another legendary Soul Man, Percy Sledge. I think he will be immortalized for his classic "When A Man Loves A Woman" a song we all grew up with. Percy continued to perform and was a great southern soul ambassador till the end. On the right is a recent photograph of Percy in happier times with my good friend and singer Randy Darbonne. A job well done Mr Percy Sledge you will not be forgotten. (see the video tribute at the bottom of the page).

Ok, it's on with the music all will be back to normal next week.

Biography of Howard Hewett
Marie Parkes & Howard 2015
Raised in Akron, Ohio, Hewett moved to Los Angeles in 1976, where he met John and Alonzo Daniels, owners of an historical club in the LA Crenshaw district, called Maverick's Flat. It was at Maverick's that Hewett first met Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley (eventually Shalamar). Hewett and the Daniels brothers formed a show group called "Beverly Hills" and through Daniels bookings toured throughout Europe, the UK, Scandinavia and Asia for all of 1978 till the middle of 1979. After returning from overseas, Hewett started recording for Jeffrey Bowen, a Motown producer (The Temptations, Commodores, Bonnie Pointer) who was working on a solo project on guitarist Eddie Hazel (Parliament-Funkadelic).

Hewett never completed the project because towards the end of 1979, he got a call from Jeffrey Daniel, who was on the road with Shalamar in the middle of a promotional tour. They had suddenly found themselves in need of a lead singer and Daniel made Hewett an offer that he accepted. Within three days Hewett flew to New Jersey, where he met up with Watley and Daniel, rehearsed the lip synch and choreography to the current Shalamar single "Take That To The Bank", and found himself in front of a TV camera on a local dance show in Paterson, New Jersey. They completed the promotional tour and returned to Los Angeles and immediately started recording the Big Fun LP with their producer, Leon Sylvers. The trio went on to record songs such as "Second Time Around", "Make That Move", "A Night to Remember", "Dancing in the Sheets" and the ballad "This Is for the Lover in You". Hewett was the group's lead singer from 1979 until 1985. More at Wiki

Will Downing

Welcome to this weeks Science of Soul because I've got a packed show for you this week. I will be featuring Will Downing's excellent new album entitled, "Chocolate Drop", Will is right back at the top of his game for this set it's smooth and sweet just as Will's fans like him. I have to say I love Will's interpretation of the Bobby Taylor classic "Does Your Mama Know About Me" that song was such a powerful statement back in the day, In fact it got me thinking about my old friend Bobby so I thought we would include a great tv spot from Bobby that was broadcast by a TV station in Hong Kong were Bobby now lives. You will find it at the bottom of the page. Back to Mr Downing; It was very hard to pick 3 tracks but I consoled myself by thinking; "its okay I can play more over the coming weeks" .... and rest assured I will.

Kenny Lattimore makes a welcome return, I'm loving his new single "You Have My Heart" and had to include this in the show, but I've not had a chance to listen to his new album yet, but looking forward to it. I'm sure you are aware we lost another Soul legend in Chicago's own Billy Butler this month, so I pay tribute to his legacy, he will be forever remembered for the stomping classic "The Right Track" but I thought I would show the more mellow side of this very underrated man. Condolences to his family.

Bell & Staples on '69 Stax LP
Great news that London Soul man Da'Paul Phillips as won the Rocket Fuel Unsigned Artist Award!  so not have I only included a track from his 2013 set "Soulful Spirit" as a website special you can find a great documentary video about the launch of his forthcoming album. Gina Carey

Gina Carey
Welcome to the latest edition of the Science of Soul with my featured album coming from Ms Gina Carey, aptly titled "The Soul Singer." The multi-talented Gina quite easily slides from soul to jazz and back again, and is the wife of acclaimed guitarist John Carey, it just must be great to live in their home with so much talent under one roof. John also has a, soon-to-be released single' it's his rendition of The O'Jays classic "She Used To Be My Girl," taken from his forthcoming album ... I will be keeping you posted.

New releases too from the great Jesse James and Will Downing, whose album "Chocolate Drops" being covered in more depth next week.

'soon' - Only on iTunes?
Legendary soulstress; Gladys Knight's new release is a reworking of The Commodores classic "Zoom" with Gospel lyrics and re-titled "Soon," it's pretty special and could even be a surprise hit for Gladys. I'll also be dipping into recent projects from Calvin Richardson Uvee Hayes and Cherie Marie's excellent 360 Degrees A Woman set, add to that a little Neo soul from Detroit's own Dwele and a nice slice of modern R&B from Jahiem and a bunch of old school classics that you might not have heard in a while - all in all a pretty varied musical pie so sit back and enjoy a slice - also I'll now be adding a video each week, some will be a straight-up music video's, others my be interviews etc., that I think might be of interest. This week it's a great interview with Dramatics'; Ron Banks LJ Reynolds & Winzell Kelly, sadly we lost Billy Butler this week, we was the brother of Jerry Butler, will be including some of his songs next week show, remember to share with a friend and spread the Science of Soul link.
